USDA Cattle on Feed Report Preview

OMAHA (DTN) -- USDA's May 1 Cattle on Feed report on Friday is expected to be neutral to somewhat bullish, given that all three of the major categories are projected to be lighter than a year ago.

Lately, the biggest concern has been the industry's placements, and following last month's jump in placements, seeing a decline in those numbers will likely sit well with traders. Aside from seeing fewer cattle marketed in sales barns in April, the other major factor affecting placements at this point has been the reduced imports of feeder cattle from Mexico.

Nevertheless, Friday's report will likely be viewed as favorable by the market. But with markets closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday, it's not likely that the report will have much effect on the marketplace on Tuesday.

USDA will release its May 1 Cattle on Feed report at 2 p.m. CDT on Friday.
